But rumors have always swirled around the death of The Doors frontman and, 36 years later, a former Paris nightclub manager is telling a different story. In a new book, Sam Bernett says that Morrison died in a toilet stall of his club after what he believes was a heroin overdose.
He writes of his shock on finding Morrison's body: "The flamboyant singer of 'The Doors,' the beautiful California boy, had become an inert lump crumpled in the toilet of a nightclub." Bernett, whose French-language book is calledThe End: Jim Morrison, says he believes two drug dealers brought Morrison's body back to his apartment.
Bernett, who was in his early 20s when Morrison died in 1971, went on to become a prominent radio personality, rock biographer and a vice president of Disneyland Paris. Though he was pestered for years by reporters investigating Morrison's death, he kept his story quiet until his wife suggested writing a book last year.
"For me it's a very bad (memory)," Bernett told The Associated Press.
Rumors have long suggested that Morrison died of an overdose and that he had fallen ill at the nightclub, but witnesses did not come forward.
Patrick Chauvel, a noted war photographer and writer, sometimes helped run the bar at the club. He recalls giving a hand to men who were carrying Morrison in a staircase there.
"I think he was already dead," said Chauvel, who considered putting the episode in a 2005 book before his publisher cautioned against it. Chauvel said he thought an ambulance would have been called if Morrison were still alive.
"I don't know," he said. "It was a long time ago, and we weren't drinking only water."
An official at the Paris prosecutor's office said it was very unlikely the case on Morrison's death would be reopened or that anybody could be prosecuted in the affair, because the statute of limitations — the time limit on legal proceedings — had run out.
Stephen Davis, the author of "Jim Morrison: Life, Death, Legend," says he would not rewrite history because of the new book. Based on his reporting, he believes Morrison did overdose at the club, but that it was shortly before his death — not the same night — and that he survived the experience.
"It just seems likely that if he died in the toilet of a nightclub, it would have come out before now," Davis said.
Morrison came to Paris in March 1971 at a troubled time in his life. At a 1969 concert in Florida, he was accused of exposing his genitals to the audience. He was convicted of indecent exposure and profanity, and the episode led to promoters canceling concerts and earned the band a stream of negative publicity.
Morrison left for Paris with his appeal pending. There, he lived in a Right Bank apartment with his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, and he wandered the streets, sightseeing and toting around a plastic bag containing his writings. In Paris, he gained so much weight as to become almost unrecognizable, and his health suffered.
He also partied. Morrison spent "practically every night" at the Rock and Roll Circus, the hip Left Bank nightclub that Bernett managed, where stars like Roman Polanski and Marianne Faithfull were regulars, Bernett said.
At around 1 a.m. on July 3, 1971, Morrison went to the club and was joined by two men — drug dealers who sold him heroin for Courson, Bernett said. At one point, Bernett noticed that Morrison had disappeared. Later, the bouncer broke down the door of a locked toilet stall, and they discovered Morrison unresponsive, Bernett said.
Bernett says he asked a doctor, a club customer, to examine the singer.
"When we found him dead, he had a little foam on his nose, and some blood too, and the doctor said, 'That must be an overdose of heroin,'" Bernett said. Bernett added that he did not see Morrison take any heroin that night but said the singer was known to sniff the drug because he was afraid of needles.
Bernett says the two drug dealers insisted Morrison was just unconscious and carried him out of the club. Though Bernett says he wanted to call the paramedics and authorities, the club's owner ordered him to keep quiet to avert a scandal.
Bernett believes the dealers brought Morrison's body home and dropped it into the bathtub, a last attempt to revive him.
Morrison's girlfriend, who died three years later of an overdose, told police an entirely different story.
Courson said the couple went to the movies and out for dinner that night, listened to records and fell asleep. According to her testimony in police records, Morrison awoke in the night feeling ill and took a hot bath. Courson said she found him dead in the tub.
Morrison was buried in Pere Lachaise cemetery, in a small ceremony without fanfare, on July 7, 1971. No autopsy was ever performed.

The native indians of the region had a legend that spoke of "a gateway to the lands of the Gods", and in that legend, it was said that in times long past great heroes had gone to join their gods, and passed through the gate for a glorious new life of immortality, and on rare occasions those men returned for a short time with their gods to "inspect all the lands in the kingdom" through the gate.
Another legend tells of the time when the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Peru and looted gold and precious stones from the Inca tribes. According to one legend presented in the book, Secret of the Andesby Brother Philip, (as channeled by author/contactee, George Hunt Williamson, "Road in the Sky" -- Markawasi), one Incan priest of the Temple of the Seven Rays named Amaru Meru (Aramu Muru) fled from his temple with a sacred golden disk known as "the key of the gods of the seven rays", and hid in the mountains of Hayu Marca. He eventually came upon the doorway which was being watched by shamen priests. He showed them the key of the gods and a ritual was performed with the conclusion of a magical occurrence initiated by the golden disk which opened the portal, and according to the legend blue light did emanate from a tunnel inside. The priest Amaru Meru handed the golden disk to the shamen and then passed through the portal "never to be seen again". Archeologists have observed a small hand sized circular depression on the right hand side of the small entranceway, and have theorized that this is where a small disk could be placed and held by the rock.
VISIONS OF STARS
According to some individuals who have lain their hands on the small door, a feeling of energy flowing has been commented on as well as strange experiences such as visions of stars, columns of fire, and the sounds of unusual rhythmic music. Others have said that they have perceived tunnels on the interior of the structure, although nobody as yet has found a gap that would illustrate the door opening. On the contrary the professional opinion is that there is no actual door, for the frame and the entranceway and the back of the alcove are all carved from the same rock.
It is interesting to note that the structure undeniably resembles the Gate of the Sun at Tiwanaku(Tiahuanaco) and five other archeological sites which link together a cross by imaginary straight lines crossing each other exactly at the point where the plateau and Lake Titicaca are located. News reports from the region over the last twenty years have indicated sizable UFO activity that the locals call OVNIs (object volant non-identifiable) in all of these areas especially at Lake Titicaca. Most of the reports describe glowing blue spheres and bright white disk shaped objects. The aforementioned legend concludes with a prophecy that the door of the gods will one day open "many times bigger than it actually is" and allow the gods to return in their Sun Ships.
Aramu Muru came from the ancient continent of Mu with many power objects, including the powerful Solar Disc that had previously hung in an important temple in his homeland. He also brought many sacred rites and symbols, like the Chacana, that after being taken by missionaries to all the four directions served to unite the Americas into a homogenous spiritual culture. Legends state that Aramu Muru assisted many Native American tribes after they arrived in Peru during the time of the destructions of Mu (Lemuria) and the Old Red Land (Atlantis). He then united these tribes into a very advanced culture that proceeded to build many of the towering megalithic temples that still adorn the landscape of Peru today. Although most of us have forgotten our past connections, the spirit of Aramu Muru has never left us, and he continues to watch over all the Americas from his Illumination Temple located above Lake Titicaca. Moreover, the great Solar Disc of Mu is also said to still continue to exist and is currently located on the bottom of the sacred lake.
Since 1992, when the Pachacuti or “World Transformation” anciently prophesied by the Incas first commenced, Aramu Muru and the Illumination Temple have made their presence known again and the Solar Disc has begun emanating powerful streams of spiritual light that will eventually unite the Americas and uplift the entire world. Soon the prophecy will be complete; the Eagles (North America) will reunite with the Condors (South America) and the tribes will once again become one.

"According to some proponents, in 2012 there will be an alignment of the sun with the 'Dark Rift', because of precession.
What is the "Dark Rift"?
The "Dark Rift" or "Great Rift" or "Milky Way Rift" is not actually a 'rift' at all. It is a series of overlapping dust and molecular gas clouds that are positioned between our solar system and the nuclear bulge of the galaxy. These clouds block the light from that portion of the milky way, and cause it to appear as if the Milky Way is divided into two roughly equal sections above and below them. These clouds (or 'dark nebulae') are several thousand light years distant, and almost completely obscure the central portion of the galaxy from our view.1 One of the Messier objects (M24) is actually a window or tunnel through the dust clouds. What appears to be a deep sky object is actually a portion of the Sagittarius Arm of the galaxy.
Why is the Dark Rift significant?
John Major Jenkins contends that the Dark Rift was significant spiritually to the ancient Maya, and that the creators of the calendar intentionally arranged for the end of a 13 baktun cycle to occur on the December solstice, 2012.2 Whether the Dark Rift was or not significant to the ancient Maya remains a topic of contention between Jenkins and the rest of the Mayanist scholars.3
Jenkins contends that the Maya who developed the long count calendar deliberately structured it to end a major cycle in 2012 because that is when the solstice sun would 'align' with the dark rift.
Jenkins recognizes that the moment of actual alignment between the solstice sun and the galactic equator occurred in 19984,5, but calls the period 18 years before and after 1998 (the period of time that the solstice sun is crossing over the galactic equator) "Era 2012".6
Regardless of any spiritual significance to the ancient Maya, to modern astronomers, the Dark Rift is not significant, except that it is in the way of some really interesting stuff. There is nothing unusual about the dark rift. It happens to be a collection of several fairly dense clouds of dust and molecular gas, but according to estimates, there are on average two such clouds in any line of sight extending 1000 light years.7 The fact that the 'alignment' has been occurring on every December solstice since 19808 shows that it is not a unique and rare occurrence.
What is behind the Dark Rift?
Our view of the area behind the Dark Rift is only blocked in certain wavelengths. In other wavelengths (e.g., infrared or X-Ray) of light we can actually see through the clouds to the other side. This is how astronomers were able to plot the motions of the stars in the galactic core, and deduce the existence of a 4-Million solar mass black hole in that region. So the region beyond the dark rift is not unknown to science at all. In fact, science has a pretty good idea of what is on the other side of the dark rift.
Claims about the alignment
According to some proponents, the fact that this alignment occurs is cause for concern. In some versions the combined gravity of the galactic black hole and the sun will cause earthquakes, tsunamis, floods or severe weather. We rebut these claims on the black hole page. In other versions the alignment will cause more esoteric issues, such as a blockage of an undefined type of energy emanating from the black hole, or from the galactic core, or both. Some recent claims have focused on dark energy as the culprit.
Other meanings of the Dark Rift'
Another meaning of ‘dark rift’ appears to be a combination or confusion between the above definition and the galactic plane. One author has proposed that the ‘dark rift’ is a region along the galactic equator where there is a high concentration of dark objects; asteroids, dead planets, dark stars, etc. No evidence of this region has been provided, and in any rate (as noted previously) we are currently moving away from this proposed region. As is often the case, there is a tiny germ of truth to this claim. See the galactic plane page for details.
In conclusion: We have shown that the alignment of the solstice sun is not a unique and rare occurrence. We have also shown that there are no consequences to this alignment.
