After The Banking Crisis...

www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2014/12/15/370817279/-warning-shot-sen-elizabeth-warren-on-fighting-the-banks-and-her-political-futur?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=2041
"After the banking crisis and the bailouts and all of the awful shit we experienced many new laws were put in place to try and keep this from happening again. Since then law after law has been repealed (some justly because they were a little over reactionary and worded poorly.) With this bill, which confounds me to no end because it makes no sense, it's almost as if we're bailing them out before they fail and then we'll bail them out again too. And the icing on the cake is they also are repealing every last law put in place after the banking crisis. The only people who will benefit will be the rich and when it fails the only people who will hurt will be the masses. It's not a question of if it's when the next bubble will burst and this law might make it the worst bubble ever. I'm honestly concerned."

Congress Forfeits War on Medical Marijuana

"For years, medical marijuana patients and organizations protected under state laws have faced scrutiny from the federal government. However, the new $1.1 trillion federal spending bill has excluded medical marijuana enforcement from funding on a federal level.
This is a giant leap for U.S. drug policy, as states are now finally getting the freedom to enact and enforce their own medical marijuana laws. It’s about damn time too, considering a whopping 78% of Americans support medical marijuana and about 50% of them support recreational use.
Bill Piper, director of the Drug Policy Alliance’s office of national affairs had this to say:
- See more at: http://massreport.com/congress-forfeits-war-on-medical-marijuana/#sthash.HeHhwl6t.dpuf

For the first time, Congress is letting states set their own medical marijuana and hemp policies, a huge step forward for sensible drug policy… States will continue to reform their marijuana laws and Congress will be forced to accommodate them. It’s not a question of if, but when, federal marijuana prohibition will be repealed.”
Sensible indeed, since the Obama administration has spent around $300 million enforcing policies that should have been enforced alone by the state to begin with. Shutting down licensed businesses and prosecuting patients and growers that are protected under state law doesn’t seem like the wisest way to spend $300 million.
“Congress has finally listened to the vast majority of Americans who believe the federal government has no right to interfere in the personal decision to use medical marijuana made by a patient in consultation with his or her doctor,” says Major Neill Franklin (Ret.) executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, “Law enforcement never should have been a part of that decision and if this amendment passes, they no longer will.”
“This legislation makes it clear that the D.E.A. has no business interfering in states’ medical marijuana laws,” Marijuana Policy Project communications director Mason Tvert says, “Taxpayer money should not be used to punish seriously ill people who use medical marijuana and the caregivers who provide it to them.”
Though this is good news, this compromise is only reached as long as the new DOJ measure is in effect, and unfortunately, it ends in September 2015. So while medical marijuana patients and suppliers can breathe easy for a little while, advocates and lobbyists are still working to make this particular amendment permanent.

The Future of Robots Doing Our Job Better

Robots are taking over the workplace.

"Inside a hip hotel room in Cupertino, California—just a short walk from Apple’s headquarters—the phone rings. I answer. A recorded voice tells me that my delivery has arrived. Just outside the door, I find a squat, white pillar of plastic and metal waiting expectantly.
A gray hatch on the top springs open, revealing a small, contoured compartment. I grab the courtesy toothbrush. Two beady white eyes blink at me from the touchscreen below. “Did you get everything you requested?” a prompt asks me. “All set,” I press, and it asks me what I thought of the service. Amused, I rate it five stars. The little robot hoots and twists a few times in a poor imitation of Chubby Checker before motoring off down the hall."Don't worry. Experts say they complement us and make our skills more valuable.

Interstellar [2014]

"Anne cried a lot, but doesn't she have a boyfriend? Wait, I thought it was a husband. She was only trying to get back home, because she was in love. Can you hear a heart beat in space?

"Dude, you can't save the world and save yourself, we all knew that. Beyond the effects and the mind-numbing adventure in space, these actors got to pour their tears out. Not sure what science was learned here. I felt like my brain needed an upgrade after all 169 Minutes flashed by. I think they hit the nail though, it's just sorta ironic our most scientific film in USA is sorta cheesy. "

SeaWorld CEO Resigns As Profits Tank After Animal Rights Backlash

"The belief that any publicity is good publicity has taken a hit with the resignation of Jim Atchison as SeaWorld CEO and the laying off of 300 workers. SeaWorld is not admitting that opposition to their treatment of orcas (Orcinus orca) is responsible, but plenty of others are willing to connect the dots, sometimes literally.
As we've reported before, SeaWorld profits are drastically down since the filmBlackfish exposed the way some orcas have lived up to their popular name of killer whales by causing the deaths of their trainers.
Evidence that orcas live far longer in the wild than in captivity, reversing the pattern for many terrestrial animals, probably hasn't helped. Rather than the problem passing as the film fades from memory, attendance at SeaWorld has continued to decline.
Atchison will remain involved with SeaWorld as Vice President, and certainly isn't admitting fault, saying, “It has been an honor to lead Seaworld. I am so proud of this Company and our dedicated team members.”
A permanent CEO has yet to be chosen, and until one is, it remains to be seen whether SeaWorld will simply try to ride out the bad publicity, or address the problem by eliminating orcas from their line-up. An expressed intention to double the size of their orca tanks certainly has not achieved the response SeaWord hoped."

Another Victory

"By taking a stand against the biotech and poultry industries, German supermarkets have proven that it’s possible to respond to consumer demand for poultry that is fed non-GMO feed and in doing so, force significant changes to the supply chain despite pressure from Monsanto and industry trade associations,” said Ronnie Cummins, international director of the Organic Consumers Association and its Mexico affiliate, Via Organica.
The German Poultry Association had previously claimed that there simply wasn’t enough GMO-free feed in the system to supply Europe’s needs. But following close consultation with Brazilian authorities, the German supermarkets realized that the reasons given by ZDG for turning their back on GMO-free feed did not stand up.
Sustainable Pulse Director, Henry Rowlands, stated:
“The wool has been pulled over the eyes of retailers across Europe by the GMO industry over the past year. We welcome the news that they have started to fight back in the interest of their customers, who do not want to buy GM-fed eggs and meat.”
Claire Robinson of Earth Open Source, a Global GMO Free Coalition partner organization, said:
“Retailers must ensure that their GMO-free feed requirements are communicated all the way along the supply chain to the Brazilian soymeal exporters.”

Extreme Levels of Pollution In Beijing

The scene could be straight from a science-fiction film: a vision of everyday life, but with one jarring difference that makes you realise you’re on another planet, or in a distant future era.

A sports class is in full swing on the outskirts of Beijing. Herds of children charge after a football on an artificial pitch, criss-crossed with colourful markings and illuminated in high definition by the glare of bright white floodlights. It all seems normal enough – except for the fact that this familiar playground scene is taking place beneath a gigantic inflatable dome.
“It’s a bit of a change having to go through an airlock on the way to class,” says Travis Washko, director of sports at the British School of Beijing. “But the kids love it, and parents can now rest assured their children are playing in a safe environment.”
The reason for the dome becomes apparent when you step outside. A grey blanket hangs in the sky, swamping the surroundings in a de-saturated haze and almost obscuring the buildings across the street. A red flag hangs above the school’s main entrance to warn it’s a no-go day: stay indoors at all costs. The airpocalypse has arrived."
